Elisha Lim's comics have been featured in gay magazines like Curve, Diva UK, Lesbians on the Loose Australia and Fiber Austria, galleries in Berlin and Munich and radio stations in Montreal and Brussels, as well as blogs and zines from Guelph to Jerusalem. They have earned the praise of Alison Bechdel and Elisha has been named one of afterellen.com's "Queer Women to Watch." 100 Butches currently runs in the Canadian queer magazine No More Potlucks and will be published as a book "100 Butches Vol. I:1-50" in April 2010. The second Tuesday is our regular monthly pool night for women at Dooly’s, but for July we have decided to do something different. Angela Schnurr and Laura King are going to tie the knot this summer and in their honour we will be having a wee advance wedding celebration with some tasty cake. Have you heard of a “Stag & Doe Party”? Well we wouldn’t be having one of those and instead we’ll be doing a “Doe & Doe Party” for Angela and Laura with an opportunity for someone to win in our “Dough & Dough” contest. (Don’t know what a “Dough & Dough” contest is? Well why not drop by Dooly’s and see?) | 4. Divergence Movie Night presents ‘Last Call at Maud’s’ - Tuesday, July 14th |
'Last Call At Maud's’ chronicles the history of the longest-running lesbian bar in the United States. This venerable San Francisco establishment opened in 1966, when lesbians were still very much in the closet. Maud's flourished throughout the '70s and '80s, enjoying an international reputation as a meeting place for lesbians and their friends, only to be shut down in 1989. Provocative personal stories of coming out in the 50s and 60s, sexual politics and softball are mixed with flashbacks to the Hollywood gay bars of the '40s and the vice raids of the '50s. | 6. Red Roof Women’s Festival - July 17th – July 19th |
Celebrating the spirit of women through music and nature. Red Roof Farm (RRF) is located approximately 45 minutes northwest of Kingston in Marlbank. This idyllic setting features two days of live music with on-site camping amidst rolling fields and lush forest all surrounded by and accessible to beautiful Lime Lake. There are only 250 tickets being sold to this event. You can pre-reserve tickets by sending an e-mail to info@redroofwomensfestival.ca. Let them know how many tickets you would like and if you are going to camp Friday and/or Saturday night. Weekend passes are $ 75.00 per person. Camping sites are $25.00 per tent per night. | 7. Saturday Morning Run - August 1st and September 5th |
Ottawa Frontrunners, a GLBTTQ club, extends a warm invitation to women of all abilities to join them for a run or walk at 9:00 am. at the Lisgar Street entrance to City Hall, 111 Lisgar at the intersection of Cartier. They all start off together, and there is usually someone running at a similar pace. If not, they try to ensure that no-one runs alone, and someone will adjust their pace accordingly. They run various distances as some want to go farther than others, but they all meet up afterwards at a predetermined spot nearby, which is always announced at the beginning of the run. On Saturdays it is generally Dantessa Restaurant, 131 Cooper Street at Cartier, where they go for breakfast. Approximately 50,000 people will attend the various activities planned throughout the week by various LGBT organizations in Ottawa and Gatineau. Marches, vigils, picnics, sporting events, workshops, info fairs, cultural events, drag shows, dance parties and entertainment will offer something for everyone in the queer and queer-friendly community. On Sunday, August 30th, we will proudly take the Capital Pride Parade past Parliament Hill and the Supreme Court to City Hall’s Festival Plaza. This festive parade has historically been attended by over 32,000 people each year and takes marchers past some of the institutions that matter so much to individuals’ rights to live equally and fairly by all levels of government. Women For Sobriety is a self-help recovery program for women that can be used with or without a 12-step program. Meetings are strictly confidential and anonymous. Any woman with a sincere desire to start dealing with her addiction is welcome. Meetings run from 7:00 - 8:15 pm. at the headquarters of the Christmas Exchange Program at 1390 Prince of Wales, 4th floor. The office building is in behind the Chateau Royale apartments and has a restaurant on the first floor. Turn west at the lights between Dynes Road and Meadowlands Drive East. Parking is free.
