Hey LIX Chicks,
We have finalized the details
for our first Dinner/Speaker Meeting and we're very excited! Out
and proud lesbian member of parliament, Libby Davies, has agreed
to be our first guest speaker!
LIBBY DAVIES, MP VANCOUVER EAST
Libby was first elected as Member of Parliament
for Vancouver East in 1997. Re-elected in 2000, again in June 2004,
and most recently in 2006, she is the NDP House Leader and federal
NDP Spokesperson for Drug Policy Reform, Solicitation Laws, and
Infrastructure and Communities for the Greater Vancouver Area.
Her history as a strong community activist for
Vancouver East began over 30 years ago when she began to develop
her strong grassroots approach to working with people and diverse
communities. In 1982 Libby was elected to Vancouver City Council
and served 5 consecutive terms. She became involved in every community
issue, from protecting community services to developing affordable
housing, fighting for parks and working for the elimination of poverty.
Since being elected Member of Parliament, Libby
has provided a strong voice for East Vancouver. In the House of
Commons she has consistently raised issues of concern to her constituents
including community safety, affordable housing, adequate childcare,
and post-secondary education. Libby's community office has helped
hundreds of residents with federal government matters such as immigration,
student loans, employment insurance, taxation, pensions, and Aboriginal
affairs.
Libby has been an outspoken advocate for same-sex
marriage and drug policy reforms to stop the criminalization of
drug users and the harm caused by Canada's prohibitionist policies.
She has received awards from organizations such as the Vancouver
and District Labour Council and the YMCA who have acknowledged her
lifelong fight for social justice and equality.
Born in 1953 in England, Libby came to Canada
in 1968. She moved to Vancouver in 1969 and has one son, Lief Eriksen.
She lives with her partner, Kimberly Elliott.

reservation
sheet at the Coffee Meeting at Bridgehead this Tuesday (April 4th). |
|
The Pantry is a successful,
woman-owned, vegetarian, unlicensed cafe that has been in business
since 1975. We are currently working out the menu details with Carolyn,
the owner of the cafe. We only have seating for 40 women so RESERVE
YOUR SEATS NOW!!! Call Marie at 231-4347, or reply to this email,
by Friday April 14th. If there are any seats left over at the end
of the day on the 14th, we will be opening up the event to the larger
lesbian community. This event will definitely sell out so reserve
now.
Lucy will have the reservation sheet at the Coffee
Meeting at Bridgehead this Tuesday (April 4th). You can guarantee
your reservation by giving her your name and your $25. For those
of you who are unable to attend the meeting, we will make arrangements
to get your payment once I hear from you. As we need to pre-pay
the cafe, we will not be holding seats for women who haven't paid.
This is going to be a fabulous event...the first
of our social/educational dinner meetings! Hope to see you there!
Ciao,
Marie
