Upcoming Events of Interest

Hey LIX Chicks,

Well, I survived Hallowe’en and to tell you the truth, it was almost fun! The weather was actually balmy on October 31st and Lucy convinced me to dress in costume.

We took Ana and three of her friends out trick-or-treating. Picture this...a 400-pound ballerina accompanied by a giant rabbit in tails! Fortunately Ana’s still too young to suffer embarrassment when her parents are being very ‘uncool’.

The Glebe was hopping (pardon the pun) and Ana scored big time! Potato chips seemed to be the treat of choice this year which worked out well...it meant that the kids’ bags got full faster so we were finished by about 8:00 pm.

That gave the children some time to come down from their sugar-high. Try dealing with four kids under the age of 8 who are wired for sound on Kit-Kats and gumballs. I can hardly wait for next year!

The Inside-Out Film & Video festival was a great success this year. Thanks to all you LIX Chicks who attended. I spoke with festival organizer, Jason St. Laurent, between films during the Saturday evening screenings and he told me that the number of lesbian attendees was up significantly from last year.

We had another great five-minute infomercial at our November 6th LIX Networking meeting. Tone Cluster members, Sarah, Cora, Fiona and Faye came to the meeting. Sarah, their president, stepped up onto the stage to tell us all about their organization. Tone Cluster has been around Ottawa since 1994 and one of the great things about this choral group is that it contributes both musically to the Ottawa arts scene and socially as part of Ottawa’s LGBT community.

There are approximately 25 singers in the choir - male, female, gay and straight. They are led by musical director, Jane Perry. The choir likes to focus on creativity, fun and diversity. Each year, the concerts have a theme and this year is no exception. The theme for the 2008-2009 season is children (eg. the Ten Oaks Project). Tone Cluster is a charitable organization and they are always looking for sponsors. Their next concert, “Tone Cluster Unplugged”, is on Saturday, November 15th at the Church of the Ascension (see Upcoming Event of Interest #4 below).

One LIX member asked them what kind of musical repertoire they have and the response was ‘everything and anything – madrigals, experimental, show tunes and even some naughty songs’. Unfortunately we couldn’t get them to sing us a naughty song, or any other song for that matter. Anyone who is interested in learning more can drop by one of their rehearsals held on Monday evenings from 7:30 - 9:30 pm. at St John’s Anglican Church (corner of Elgin and Somerset) or visit their web site at http://www.gaycanada.com/tonecluster.

Enjoy the warmer weather. It ain’t gonna’ last long. Catch you later...

5. Divergence Movie Night presents ‘The End of Second Class’ - Tuesday, November 18th.
