Tone Cluster - quite a queer choir – kicks off its fifteenth concert season by presenting “a concert of music for unaccompanied choir, the greatest test and the greatest joy for any choral ensemble. We’re performing a cappella pieces from 17th century composer William Byrd to Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry, Be Happy! and everything in between”, says Music Director Jane Perry. Tone Cluster’s special guest will be Ottawa cellist and composer Kirk Starkey, who is pleased to present the first performance of Hidden for cello and sampler (2008). A traditional composition employing an acoustic cello and real time sampling, Hidden brings fresh perspective to what is possible with a cello and foot controller. The End of Second Class traces the debate on same sex marriage in Canada over the past decade up to the passage of same sex marriage on July 20, 2005. The story is told from the perspective of three couples and the lawyers and activists who sought to uphold the Charter Rights of lesbians and gay men against the opposition of the Government of Canada, provincial governments and a coalition of religious opposition. The End of Second Class presents a powerful polemic on an issue of social justice and equality which remains controversial today and vividly paints the context in which gays and lesbian sought to overcome a history of discrimination and second class status.

| 6. ‘The Feminization of HIV/AIDS in Africa and Women’s Equality Rights’ - Wednesday, November 19th |
POWER (Progress & Opportunities for Women’s Equality Rights): Africa/Canada is bringing Aissatou Diajhate, Director of Programmes at the Stephen Lewis Foundation, to the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. Aissatou will analyze the disproportionate vulnerability of women in Africa to HIV/AIDS, discuss how gender inequality translates into double jeopardy for these women, and talk about the differences a rights-based strategy could make to the lives of women in Africa. The Ottawa Children's Aid Society is actively recruiting adoptive and foster parents in the LGBT community. They hold two information sessions a month. The first Thursday of every month is for LGBT people interested in adoption. The last Thursday of the month is for those interested in fostering. Women For Sobriety is a self-help recovery program for women that can be used with or without a 12-step program. Meetings are strictly confidential and anonymous. Any woman with a sincere desire to start dealing with her addiction is welcome. Meetings run from 7:00 - 8:15 pm. at the headquarters of the Christmas Exchange Program at 1390 Prince of Wales, 4th floor. The office building is in behind the Chateau Royale apartments and has a Chinese restaurant on the first floor. Turn west at the lights between Dynes Road and Meadowlands Drive East. Parking is free.
