Upcoming Events of Interest

Hey LIX Chicks,

The following does not necessarily reflect the views of the entire LIX Steering Committee...although it probably does. Nonetheless, I take full responsibility for these political comments. So please direct all critical responses and pissed off feelings directly to me at info@girlswanttoknow.com. Where do I begin? I am so freaked out by the upcoming election that I know I’ll be a wreck watching the results come in next Tuesday night! If Stephen ‘sweater vest boy’ Harper gets in with a majority, we are in real trouble...as lesbians...as women...and as Canadians. Don’t let that calm, Mr. Nice Guy appearance fool you. Talk about your wolf in sheep’s clothing (or sheep’s vest in this case)! The only reason this right-wing, anti-abortion, anti-gay, Christian masquerading as a ‘cool family man who really gives a shit about working people’ hasn’t shown his true colours...is that he didn’t have a majority government. Be afraid! Be very afraid! Then get out there and vote AGAINST Stephen Harper on October 14th!

And just in case you have lulled yourself into a false sense of security about the level of homophobia here in the valley, check out the following story about the horrific experience that Dr. Alex Winter and his male partner are having in Arnprior right now! The following link takes you to Kathleen Petty’s show on CBC Radio, Ottawa Morning, where this was the top story on Monday, October 6th: go to http://www.cbc.ca/ottawamorning/, scroll down to Monday, October 6th and click on ‘Gay couple’s nightmare in Arnprior’ to listen to the story. (The story will be listed under ‘More stories’ in the Archives after October 12th.)

What does this have to do with the federal election, you may well ask? Everything, in my opinion. You can be darned sure that some of those homophobic folks in Arnprior who are taunting Alex and his partner with words like ‘Fucking faggots! We don’t want you here!’ think that they have the Lord’s blessing for their queer-hating actions. Many right-wing Christians believe that LGBT people are sick and/or sinners deserving of abuse. Many right-wing Christians take busloads of their own pre-pubescent children to anti-abortion rallies, stick placards in their innocent, little hands and make them march around chanting things like ‘Abortion Kills Children’. Call me crazy but I don’t want a right-wing Christian running our country. Stephen Harper is a right-wing Christian. You do the math.

It’s October...Hallowe’en will soon be upon us. Lucy and I will be taking Ana out trick-or-treating on October 31st. Here’s the plan: soon after dusk, we leave our own neighbourhood, Little Italy, as it’s pretty quiet here and not too many people shell out candy, and we head for, where else, THE GLEBE...where the residents spare no expense in decorating their houses to the Hallowe’en hilt and where the river of candy knows no bounds! Ana runs from house to house collecting ridiculous amounts of treats in her large pillowcase (no flies on us...plastic bags break!). Lucy and I move from curb to curb...the ever-watchful parents. Occasionally, Lucy reminds Ana “Don’t forget to say thank you” or “Please keep off the grass”. I smoke cigarettes and try to stay warm. What are you doing on Hallowe’en night? There are queer plays to see (Tototoo at Arts Court...see Event #14 below) and the Inside Out Ottawa-Gatineau LGBT Film & Video Festival will be in full swing (Event #16). The following night, HallowQueen3: The Church of Disco takes place at St. Brigid’s Church (Event #17). All in all, Hallowe’en weekend looks very gay and festive this year!

LIX Chicks are hitting the big time! The October issue of Curve, North America’s best-selling lesbian magazine, includes an article about our very own, Molly King: “Dogs and lesbians - they go together like sneakers and socks, hippies and hemp, sex toys and lube. It makes sense, then, that there’s a plethora of lesbians who breed and show their dogs. Molly King never intended to be a dog breeder. It all started with a move to the country outside of Ottawa, Ontario........” (Curve magazine, October 2008). Who knew? Congratulations Molly! We encourage women to go out and buy the October issue of Curve.

At this month’s October LIX meeting, we didn’t have a five-minute infomercial as our scheduled presenter was hit with the flu at the last moment. So Lucy, Sinead and Catherine put their heads together and came up with a discussion topic for the group: How Do You Network? Responses varied from: extensive use of the Internet; courageously getting out there, trying things and talking to other women; the PTS Women’s Group; LIX; LOG; SAGE; women’s sports groups; and the Public Service Pride Group. The general feeling was that Ottawa’s lesbian community can be challenging to ‘break into’ for newcomers...but that most women find our community a welcoming place once they make the initial contact.

We have a very full Upcoming Events section this month. Who said Ottawa was the town that fun forgot? Oh...that was me! I’m thrilled to say that I was wrong! Happy Hallowe’en everyone. Catch you later...

In the fall of 1955, a gay sex scandal erupted in the unassuming, wholesome and "vice-less" town of Boise, Idaho, as teenage boys who had prostituted themselves to older men began to disclose their dalliances to authorities. Overnight, Boise's homosexual underworld-comprised mostly of married family men-was splashed onto headlines and thrust into the spotlight. What followed was a classic witch-hunt, marked by intense homophobic hysteria, in which the whole town became embroiled. The Fall Of ’55 provides unique insights into the pre-Stonewall gay experience as well as 1950s America's struggle with the issue of homosexuality and the prevailing myth that it was a cancer that could be spread to the youth. 82 min.
