LIX MONTHLY E-NEWS - SEPTEMBER 2006

Hey LIX Chicks!

Well so much for that heat wave...I'm sitting here wearing wool socks and a sweater and drinking a hot cup of tea! It's that 'back to school', 'fall is on its way', time of the year. I have a strong urge to go out and buy a new pink eraser and some pencil crayons. Amazing how ingrained those old patterns can be!

I absolutely must begin this month's e-news with a huge THANK YOU to all the LIX volunteers who helped us with the LIX Pride events. All those fabulous dykes who set up chairs and ran the bar at our screening of '533 Statements'. The amazing LIX chicks who worked at our Proud Chicks Dance Party...staffing the front door, selling bar tickets, decorating and setting up the room, creating beautiful food trays, organizing and running the bar, and cleaning up at the end of the evening. This year's dance was a great success and we couldn't have done it without you! And last, but certainly not least, a big thank you to the real LIX troopers who came out in the rain and marched with the LIX banner in the Pride Parade. Our events made up the major portion of events for lesbians at this year's Pride celebrations...I think we should all be very proud of ourselves and of our excellent, rapidly-growing LIX network.

Speaking of which...the 150th lesbian to become a LIX Chick signed up at the September coffee meeting! Can you believe it! And Bridgehead was packed with fabulous lesbians once again. God knows what those three straight sods in the back thought of us as they pretended to be reading their newspapers...I'm sure they got an earful. Perhaps we should consider applying for a government grant since we're doing all this unintentional educational work anyway.

This month's five-minute infomercial was presented by Robin Berry who gave us an interesting and useful presentation entitled Top 5 Habits to Keep Your Computer in Good Health. Everything from the importance of having spyware removal/virus scanning software to physical and virtual cleaning of your computer.

Those of us who thought backing up our files meant printing them on paper and putting them in a filing cabinet, learned a lot. (No wonder I keep running out of space in my old two-drawer cabinet.) And did I mention the chocolates that Robin's wife, Mary Beth, passed around during the presentation? Robin is the proud owner of Robin's Rainbow Computer Services. To find out more about Robin and her company, check out her web site at www.robinsrainbow.com. Mary Beth is a private chef and caterer and can be reached at (613) 868-6936.

We were honoured this month to have LIX member, Donna Sharkey, talk with us about the Cluny Project...an outstanding fundraising effort that she started after visiting Sierra Leone earlier this year. Donna was in Sierra Leone researching the conditions of women and girls who have survived the war. What she found disturbed her so incredibly that, when she returned to Ottawa, she decided that she had to do something to help. Here's a short excerpt from background information to Donna's project: "The war is over, the suffering is not. Picture a girl of 10 years old torn from her village after her family has been massacred, carried into the jungle by rebel soldiers. She is raped repeatedly. She is forced into slavery, to cook for the soldiers, carry their water, smuggle their weapons, serve their sexual demands. When the war that has devastated her country finally ends, she is 13 and pregnant and HIV-positive and alone."

But what is truly amazing is that in Sierra Leone Donna also found 17 nuns from the Order of St. Joseph of Cluny. These nuns are running schools, clinics, food programs, counselling services and skills training courses and they are making a difference in the lives of the women and girls of Sierra Leone! Despite their small numbers and sparse resources, the Cluny Sisters go into the countryside where the needs are greatest. One of their programs is a re-training school for girls who have survived female slavery in the rebel army. The school teaches them practical skills such as sewing and crafts...the products of which they can sell. The school also provides them with land on which to grow crops. Despite all they've endured, the girls are rebuilding their lives, becoming self-sufficient, helping to support families!

However, the Cluny Sisters are desperate for resources in order to continue their work with traumatized women and girls. So one of the things that Donna is doing is raising money. She, and a small group of women, are hosting a fundraising dinner for the Cluny Project. The dinner is being held at The Green Door Vegetarian Restaurant on Monday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m. For a $50 entry fee, participants will be able to enjoy a buffet meal and hear one of the Cluny nuns speak of her and her colleague's work. Sister Marie Therese Njie is here in Ottawa studying counselling and will be speaking on behalf of her Order. In a quite unprecedented display of generosity, The Green Door will carry the entire costs, donating both the food and the labour, which means that all proceeds from the tickets and from beverage sales will go directly to the Cluny Project. Supporters of the event will also receive a receipt for income tax purposes. There are only 100 seats available for this fundraiser. If you'd like to enjoy an excellent vegetarian meal, hear Sister Marie Therese Njie speak, and support this valuable project in aid of the women and girls of Sierra Leone, please contact Sue at suesmee@sympatico.ca or call (613) 232-0704.

"Lesbian network spreading like wildfire! Your town could be next!" This was the headline in the Peterborough Examiner on July 26th. (Just kidding.) But I did receive an email from a woman named Kathleen who lives in Peterborough. Here's what she had to say: "Greetings from Peterborough, Ontario! One of my dear friends from Ottawa sent me your newsletter and congrats, it is incredible! Wish we had such great events...I am moving nearer Toronto in the fall but still many plans for Ottawa visits...hope to make one of your events. Thanks again for all your work in creating this wonderful information source for our community of women...please add me to your email list...cheers!!!" We on the LIX Steering Committee would just like to take the opportunity to say thanks to all of you for your ongoing support and for doing your own part to spread the word to your friends. This summer Peterborough, tomorrow south-eastern Ontario!

And while I'm on the subject of fabulous LIX members, I am proud to introduce a brand new section in the newsletter...Special Interest Groups and Activities. I'm very excited because this is the kind of social networking that we've been trying to encourage for months. Two brave LIX Chicks actually sent me information about activities they would like to organize with other interested women! Bravo Barb and Louise! I'm sure that within the LIX membership of 150 lesbians, you will have no trouble finding like-minded women! Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

So...whether you're a sports dyke interested in creating a lesbian roller-derby league, an unattached gal looking to start a weekly movie night for single lesbians, an avid reader looking to start a LIX book club, or a bridge player looking to create a monthly tournament, you might just find other lesbians within the Lesbian Information Xchange membership who share your interests. Remember that there are 150 of us in this network today and that number just keeps on growing! So if you've got an idea, send me an email describing the idea, along with your name and contact information and the maximum number of women you want, if that applies (like you can only fit 8 women in your kitchen for a dessert swap group). My email is mariemail2@sympatico.ca.

Capital Pride 2006

Special Interest Groups and Activities:

1. Barb would like to hook up with some other LIX Chicks to go golfing. The more the merrier. If you're interested, she can be reached at barbgray@magma.ca.

2. Louise is interested in joining/creating a conversational French class for basic/intermediate French. She's thinking that the group could either join an evening continuing education class or, if enough women are interested, hire their own French teacher. If there's a LIX Chick who would be interested in being the French instructor, that would be even better! Interested women can contact Louise at redballoons101@hotmail.com.

Learn how to change the oil, how important it is to change your car's fluids and have regular maintenance done, the difference between snow tires and summer tires, what a spark plug looks like and how it works, and how to change a tire (and where that tire is!). Laura has been working on cars since she was a little girl. She's been apprenticing for four years after receiving honours in Mechanics School. She is now working at Otto's BMW. Laura developed this workshop in Halifax in response to requests from her women friends who felt they were being ripped off by mechanics. The workshop had such an overwhelming response that Laura repeated it seven more times! It is truly a thing of beauty! Feel free to congratulate our web gal Wendy, personally at the coffee meeting on October 3rd. Wendy's the gorgeous blonde with the athletic body and the sparkling personality.
