A FTP program is used to gain access to your site files, transfer large volumes of files etc.

  • Click here to download the FTP program
  • Save it to a folder you will remember
  • Right click on your start button (lower left hand side of your screen), choose EXPLORE
  • find the file, double click on it unzip it and install
  • Once installed, you will need to set up your own site
  • This is what it looks like when you initially launch it:

    ftp

You will need your FTP settings information to fill in this area. You first hit the button NEW SITE. Then to the right (red box area) you enter in the FTP information. Make sure the other settings (server type, and lonon type are as below).

Once the information is in there, hit the connect.

    ftp

Once logged in, you will see a screen that looks similar to this:

    ftp

The arrow to the left is showing you your files to the files on your local hard drive. the arrow to the right (top) the files in the FTP. Typically the site files are in a folder www. or public_html. double click on the green arrow (just under NAME) to locate the folder you wish to be in.

    Contribute Issues

From time to time when working with Contribute, a LCK file is created that doesn't go away (as it should). You are suddenly not able to edit that page again. We can use an FTP program to get access to the site files and delete these. You want to be looking for a file with the .LCK extention, when you find it, select it and click delete. (to the right)

One of the other reasons we would want access to our site is to back up the site files. Once you are self sufficient in maintaining your site, we want to make sure you to regular back up's, in case of server failure.

To do a back up of the site:

    • Create a folder on your C drive for your site.
    • Get yourself there on the left, select the site files on the right and hit the arrow that's pointing to the left. The files will all copy over to your computer.
